Do you resolve?

January 1st has come and gone and I have yet to declare any resolutions. I am all for self-improvement but since I am constantly racked with guilt and self-depreciation, I resist setting goals...the list would be toooooo long. I also hate to fail. You name it, I've "resolved" to do it in the past with little to no success. A few years ago, my resolutions turned into more of a year's checklist which seemed to work for me. Here's my 2009 list:

1. Match the ounces of DDP I drink with water ounces DAILY--soooo pathetic but it will be a giant change for me and a good one. (Already struggling with this one!!)
2. Run the Striders Winter Racing Circuit--5K, 10K, 10M, 1/2 marathon, and 18K.
3. Run the Salt Lake City 1/2 marathon with my friend, Quincey.
4. Run 2 Runners' Series races in St. George to avoid St. George Marathon lottery.
5. Run St. George Marathon.
6. Run Ogden--jury out on 1/2 or full.
7. Run a family fun run with the kiddos.

I also made one very TYPICAL resolution:
No longer be able to wear the skirt I wore two Sundays ago. Waaaaah, waaaaah, waaaah.

I was in charge of finding an inspirational quote for our Relief Society Newsletter. Here's a little poem I wrote for the occassion:

YOUR NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTION
A brand new year, another chance
To look at life, and in that glance,
See where you are and what might be
If mind and soul work mightily

When choosing what will be your aim,
Work for fruits that will remain--
Kinder words, more scripture reading,
Giving freely, prophets heeding.

Pursuits like these bring lasting joy.
Better than thin waist or nifty toys.
Where your treasure's found, your heart will be.
Make your goals worth the energy.

I'd love to hear what some of your resolutions are. My cute friend Deanna wrote a great post about how to keep your resolutions. I'll have to rely on that to help me through!

I would write my resolutions, but they are the same that I made during my first mission 43 years ago and that I have been making every year since then.

Is it fair to make resolutions about things you´re already good at? I´d then resolve to clean up my plate at every meal, eat when I´m not hungry, listen to more classical music, tell more lame jokes, daily surf the Internet, show greater love for BYU sports, and easiest of all, love my family.

Great resolutions. Good luck with all that running! I'm impressed by your poetry-writing skills!

You got some serious SKILLZ my friend! I made goals and am going to collect monthly data on them, since you know data is important for everything. But I do like Scott's ideas--set goals that I'm going to keep anyway.

Did you forget one resolution???? . . . ditch the hand-me-down clogs!!! One of mine as we've already discussed . . . is to bake more than 3 times this year, pathetic I know, but it's a goal right?? And you're going to help me with that one!! I'm gearing up for the SLC 1/2 marathon. I have a training partner down here that's keeping me on track and will probably kick both of rears in that race!!! Hey I'm up for the Ogden 1/2 marathon . . . QQ

Hi Rita,
I'm not sure if you remember me, but this is Suzanne, Mandy's friend, who ran the N.U.T.S. with you & her a few years ago...ringing any bells?
ANYWAY, I see you comments on Mandy's blog (& Kristen's)quite a bit and I think that cartoon character picture that comes up with your comments is soo cute and I was wondering where you got it? I'd like to know (I'm trying to avoid using a REAL photo of me!)
Will you just click & go to my blog and make a comment with the info/website or whatever!?
THANKS!

Suzanne

I regularly set goals, but haven't even gotten around to setting New Year's goals yet.

I'm with you on the guilt thing. I tend to set specific, small and reachable goals. I can't stand the feeling of not following through on a resolution. I guess goals are really about helping us to stretch, grow, and improve instead of just the end result.
